I had been meaning to start a blog for a really long time. I love to write and I love to tell stories with photos. I just wasn't sure what my blog should focus on. So... I left the idea behind. Then, almost a year ago on Facebook, I created an album specifically dedicated to photographs of little moments of gratitude (I am a BIG believer in 'gratitude journals'--- thanks OPRAH!)
For many years, I have kept a gratitude journal where I wrote at least three things about my day that I was grateful for. When I read the things I wrote now, I feel lucky to have taken note. They really are often the small things that happened during the day that made such a difference. The written journal then evolved into a photographic album while I was living in Berlin, Germany. The photo that sparked it all was the one on the left. I took the photo with me one day while I was on the Warschauer U-Bahn (a subway) heading home from spending the day in one of Berlin's most exciting districts, Kreuzberg. The feeling of riding on the U-Bahn and catching *that* glimpse of the Spree River, The Berlin TV Tower (it really is just a big old disco ball that towers over the city) and the prints of the Brandenburger Tor on the window was a little thing about Berlin that I wanted to remember. I wanted to remember that 'whoosh' of a feeling of gratitude I would get at that moment for living in one of THE best cities in the world.
From that moment, I decided that I wanted to make a collection of photos that made me feel good about the present moment. It is often the instant feeling in present moments, the small ones, that are precious. I don't want to forget them. I may remember posing for a picture in front of Brandenburger Tor, or riding on a boat along the Spree, but I may never experience the happy feeling I would get whenever I 'whooshed' down the Warschauer U-Bahn and caught this glimpse of Berlin. This photo will take me back. I am sure of it.
